We found this tough-guy in our front yard today while mowing. He’s over 30 inches long and can move pretty quick. When you get near him he bobs his head, rattles his tail (even though he’s not a rattler or even a viper) and rubs his scales together. A pretty impressive show which I’m sure scares off a few would-be predators.
I’m not sure what kind of a snake he is, but I’m guessing some kind of a rat snake, possibly a king snake. We eventually moved him out into our field, since we were afraid we’d run over him with the mower. He’s a good snake to have around. If he’s a king snake, he’ll keep the copperhead/rattler population down around here. If he’s a rat snake, he’ll keep the rats down. Between him and our cats, the field rats don’t stand a chance.
