Steve Irwin, the well-known Australian wildlife conservationist, has died from a freak stingray accident on Monday morning.
While filming off the Great Barrier Reef, Irwin swam too close to a large stingray. Apparently the stingray got spooked, and used its poisonous barb in defense. Normally, a stingray attack isn’t fatal, just very painful. Unfortunately in this case, the barb pierced Irwin’s heart and killed him. It was a horrible, freak accident.
His show was watched by over 200 million people worldwide, many of them children, so his death has hit hard for a lot of people. In scenes similar to the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death, many mourners have laid wreaths and notes at Irwin’s wildlife park. The Australian government has offered the Irwin family a state funeral, if they want it.
I’ll admit that he sometimes got on my nerves, but he was still likable. He did a lot for wildlife conservation, and made it entertaining as well as educational for people of all ages.
Rest In Peace Steve the
