A Great Day to be a Mac User!

PowerMac G5

OH… MY… GOD…

It’s an absolutely wonderful day to be a Mac user!  Apple has FINALLY come out with the new PowerMacs.  They didn’t just bump speed and increase RAM.  They made a quantum leap in technology.  Remember the specs I showed earlier?  Well they were all spot on!  The new towers sport the new G5 64-bit PowerPC chip from IBM, running at 1.6GHz to a dual 2GHz monster.  They have 1 GHz system buses, up to 8GB of DDR SDRAM, PCI-X expansion slots, FireWire 800, Bluetooth, etc.  I want one BAD, but it would be MAJOR overkill for my line of work.  Russ?  Are you salivating yet?

Apple released Safari 1.0 today as well.  New features include increased standards compatibility, synchronization of bookmarks using iSync, a new autotab feature for loading folders quicker and a few more minor improvements.

Apple also gave a sneak-preview of Mac OS X Panther.  New features include:
• A revamped Finder more in line with iTunes and iPhoto.
• Exposé allows you to tile windows in new and helpful ways to find items more quickly (and not just in the Finder).
• iChat AV allows you to talk with other iChat users over a dial-up connection, and along with the new iSight and a broadband connection, you can see them while you talk with them.
• Fast user switching allows different users to use the same apps without logging in and out.
• A new and improved Mail application with support for threaded conversations, improved spam-blocking, improved HTML email rendering (uses the Safari engine).
• FileVault encrypts your home directory with 128-bit encryption
• A new and improved Preview app that works with PDFs much better than before.
• Font Book is a built-in font manager with dynamic activation, custom styles and support for 2-bit fonts like Korean, Chinese and Japanese.
• Built-in faxing from any application that prints.  (Cool!)
• Improved iDisk support;
• XCode is a completely new development environment with a whole slew of new features.

All I can say is wow, I want it now!  It’s slated to come out sometime in a few months though, so I’ve got to be patient.

...

Is it ready yet?

OMG, am I ever salivating big time! I can’t believe how much rendering time I will be saving when I finally get my hands on the “dual 2GHz monster”. The increased work load I will be able to carry, will easily pay for it in no time.

Panther looks awesome too. I am disappointed that I have to wait several months for it yet, but there isn’t anything I can do about it, and it was expected anyway.

Drool, drool, drool.
