A Great Fireworks Show

Our little town puts on quite a big fireworks show. For a town of only 711 people, it’s quite impressive. It draws at least a couple thousand people from miles around. Tonight was the biggest crowd I’ve seen yet, and the best fireworks show I’ve seen yet. Better than other shows I’ve seen in places like Austin and Texarkana.

My little sister (22 years old) knows half the people in town, so she was able to find us space at a friend’s house right across the street from where the fireworks were launched. Stephanie’s friend also knows a lot of people, so there ended up being about 50 of us in her backyward in lawn chairs and blankets. Everyone was talking and laughing before the show started and having a good time.

When the first firework went up, I knew we had the best seats in the area. All we had to do was lay down on the blanket and watch them explode over us. Some of the fireworks were bright enough you could see everyone’s faces easily. These weren’t rinky-dink fireworks either. Some of them shook the ground and jiggled your insides they were so big. Little kids were either giggling with glee or crying for their mothers. A couple of the fireworks were so close, that still-lit debris landed in the middle of our group causing a couple people to jump up and put it out. People were making funny comments here and there. Others cheered and clapped. It was a fun time.

And the show lasted a little over half an hour! Each year, the show gets a little bigger, a little longer. I imagine word will start spreading around and more and more people will start showing up for them. But we’ve been invited back for next year’s show, so we’ll once again have great seats to a great fireworks show and not have to worry about traffic. I’m already looking forward to it.

burning money in my opinion…but very pretty money!

If it brings together a community and gives them something to enjoy, I think it’s money well-spent. Especially when it’s something whole families can enjoy together.

We could also spend the money on a shelter for the homeless or some other community building project. Fireworks are very very expensive.

We don’t have any homeless people in this area. In five years, I’ve never seen a homeless person around here. That’s odd now that I think about it.

Don’t get me wrong, spending that money on something else for the community would be money well-spent too, but fireworks aren’t that big of a waste in my mind. Especially if it draws in people from the area and gets them talking about your little town. Keep doing it enough, and you could bring in other interests to the town as well.
