Well, I finally broke down the other day and bought a 3Com 5 port hub to make a home network. I have three Macs and a PC running RedHat 8 on it. Plus, my friend Mark usually brings his Dell (evil) laptop over to share files and network games. He’s got Windows XP on it.
I had Mark make me some ethernet cables of varying lengths to connect everything. He came over the other day and we started setting everything up. It took only a few minutes, and all 3 Macs were sharing with each other. It took a little while to get Mark’s laptop to connect, but we eventually got it working. I love having a home network! Plus, not only can I easily update and maintain all the Macs now, I can share printers with all the Macs too. So if one printer is out of color, then we can use the second one. Niiiiice.
Then we tackled the Linux box. We had to set up Samba and allow for others to login. We’re Linux newbies (especially me), so it took us a while to get everything working right. Eventually we figured it out and now I have my Linux box sharing files with the Macs too. I’m thinking of turning the Linux box into a file server, but nothing is set in stone yet.
