A New iMac

Intel iMacMy current iMac is getting long in the tooth, so I went ahead and ordered a new 20” iMac with the Intel Core Duo today. I bumped up the RAM to 2GB and bumped the graphics card to 256MB. That should give it a little staying power. Hopefully it will last as long as my current iMac.

I’m not sure when it will ship, but I would imagine on Friday or Saturday. I probably won’t get it until Wednesday or Thursday next week. Once the new one comes in, I’ll give my iMac to my parents. They will then give their even older iMac to my grandparents. So everyone comes out happy on this one.

I also ordered a Canon scanner. I’ve never really had a need for a scanner, but I recently landed a project where I’ll need one. Plus, it would be nice to scan in all the old pictures of the family my mother has collected.

I’m sure I’ll post about it when it comes in.

I just found out the scanner will come in on Tuesday or Wednesday, but the iMac won’t even ship until the 25th. Meaning I probably won’t get it until the 30th! Aarrgghhh!! Must… learn… patience...

Jan. 23: I just found out that my iMac has been shipped… from Shanghai, China! I should get it Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. Now if I could just stop checking FedEx every five minutes...

You’ll love it. I got one of the last g5s (not too thrilled with the intel move yet) And the new features have me immediately dependant. Front row is excellent, and photobooth redefines computer addiction.

Happy waiting =-)

Thanks for making my wait that much harder! Nah, I figured I would really like it. I almost bought a 20” G5 iMac a few months ago, but decided to wait to see what would come out with the new Intel chips.

I’m not disappointed in Apple’s move to Intel, but I was wondering why they chose Intel over AMD? It just seems like that would’ve made a better fit. But then again, I don’t have access to all the info Apple does.

The answer on Intel vs. AMD is easy, why would you want to enter into a deal on the x86 front going with the smaller of two players to start with? Makes more sense to team with Intel now, and then expand into offering AMD offerings later if the need comes up. (Or in my opinion go with Opteron processors in the Xserve systems). I think the move to go with Intel first for chips was a logical one, and would not rule a move to AMD as a supplier in the future. Though I would love to see a “tower” with dual processor/dual core Opteron processors! Sun’s 1U single and dual processor dual core Opteron servers are AMAZING wink

But that’s just it. AMD isn’t the little fish to Intel’s shark anymore. They’ve split the market between them now, and all indications are pointing towards AMD growing even more.

Oops. I was wrong. Intel still has about 70% of the market, but that’s down from the year before. Even Intel is admitting losing marketshare to AMD. Plus with Asian sales shifting towards AMD and companies here like Dell looking like they will too, AMD only looks to gain even more marketshare.

Nevin's gravatar Nevin United States January 21, 2006

Ahhh but look at it for more than just market share. Apple is banking on production ability, engineering assistance, etc. availability of dual core mobile chips initially, etc. Again why enter the game in the x86 processor field with the smaller of two players, start with the large one and if they don’t meet your needs deal with both at a later point. The nice part is in 2007 if Apple is not happy with price/performance/power ratios from Intel they could easily switch to AMDs offerings. With AMD shooting for a 4 core processor and scaling to 32 sockets (processors) by 2007 why not see the Intel processors in the consumer line (and/or mobile markets for the time being) and “Powermac” and Xserve’s powered by 2 or more 4 core AMD processors by early 2007?

I think Apple is playing their cards right on this one (as someone that currently owns almost 15 systems from Apple currently, from Mini’s to dual G5 towers and multiple Powerbooks), and I hope to have a top end Macbook Pro in the near future… I am happy to see how Apple is handling the transition.

You own 15 different systems? Surely you don’t use all of them still, right? If you do, then you take first place for biggest Apple fan I know.

You have a good point about Apple’s move to Intel. Their main reasoning for moving away from the PowerPC was because of low production numbers and poor performance for the power. Why take a chance at falling into the same trap with AMD?

Still, it would be nice to see them offer Macs with AMD chips in the future. Especially if AMD takes the technical lead in the CPU market.

Hi Chris – been trying to find your email address so thought the next best thing was to leave you a post… anyway, hi and could you let me know how best to get in touch?
Oh yes, in relation to the blog string, I’m with you!

Well???!!

Nevin's gravatar Nevin United States January 30, 2006

Chris,

Well actually I guess I should have said they were both for personal and for the business as well. All are active systems, and more on their way, just like more of the nice little Opteron based servers from Sun wink

It was delayed in Shanghai for a few days, so it didn’t come in on Thursday or Friday… but it came in this morning! I’m setting it all up right now. The thing is freaking fast compared to my 17” iMac, but that’s to be expected. The screen is insanely large. I love it.

I’ve taken some pictures of it, and will post more in a little bit.
