Wil Wheaton has written something that rings true with many, many of us in our late 20’s with his “Batman to the Rescue” post. He writes about how much he misses his youth and wishes he could’ve appreciated it more while he was young. He is surprisingly frank about his emotions and the things he loves and misses. He says that what started him thinking about all this was an ad on TV for an 80’s CD collection. As I was reading it, I also started thinking about my teenage years and all the great things that took place during that time.
I also saw that ad last night, and just about every song they played brought back some kind of great memory. I even downloaded an Information Society MP3 that was playing in the ad. Things were a LOT simpler when you were a kid, but they sure seemed complicated at the time. I was the runt of the school but still have a lot of great memories.
One of my most embarrassing moments was when I was in 7th grade in Brentwood Christian School in Austin. I was talking with a girl named Heather Dodson who was hands down the prettiest girl in the entire school. I considered myself a dork, so to have the belle of the school actually sitting with me and laughing at what I was saying was like a dream come true. Now, the bad thing was that I happened to have a cold that day. After I had made her laugh about something, she made a funny comment. Instead of laughing normally, I did a snort-laugh. This was a HUGE mistake because I created what had to have been the world’s largest snot bubble. It was so big, I could see it in my peripheral vision! Of course this was all happening in slow motion to me. The horror of the situation was simply overwhelming. And when it burst, it spread over a large portion of my face including my mouth. Her beautiful smile quickly turned into an expression of horror and disgust. And all she could muster was, “Ewww!”. If we would’ve been near a cliff, I would’ve thrown myself over it. I was completely and utterly embarrassed.
So that was one of the most traumatic events in my youth, but when I look back on it now, it was such a little thing. Not the snot bubble itself, it was huge, but the event. It was horrible when it happened, but now it’s one of my favorite memories. Yes, I miss my youth, but I also look forward to the rest of my life. I mean, I’m only 27, and I’ve got a long life ahead of me, God willing.
Do you have any great memories?
From looking at the Brentwood site, I can see it’s changed quite a bit since I went there. School uniforms are the first obvious change. We didn’t have to wear those then. I knew there were new buildings, since I visited the campus last year and checked things out. The number of students has greatly increased too, I believe. I think it’s doubled from when I was there, at least.
We have three yearbooks from 1987-1989. I think 1987 was the first year they made one, but I could be wrong.
Hey dude I just wanted to tell you I go to Brentwood Christian School and am a junior. I read your artical and tried to find you picture in the 1987 yearbook but only found Heather Dodson but no Wil Weaton. I am going to ask Mrs. Moss if we can borrow other yearbooks to find your picture.
