Another Panther Tour
Maury at RAILhead Design has put together a large, 36 page, 63 screenshot and 1 movie tour of Mac OS X 10.3.
Some things of note:
- Preferences: Screensaver and Desktop have been combined, as well as Keyboard & Mouse. There’s also Print & Fax, Security and Exposé preferences.
- It looks like traditional Tabs are a thing of the past. There’s a new tab button interface. It looks good.
- The new interface looks very similar to the Smoothstripes theme I have on my Mac now, but with a little more gray. This is excellent, since I can’t stand the blaring stripes in previous X incarnations.
- It’s now MUCH easier to schedule startup and shutdown times using the new Energy Saver panel.
- There’s much better control over keyboard shortcuts in the new Keyboard & Mouse panel.
- There’s a new Activity Monitor application that looks promising. It displays more information in a single window. It monitors your processes as well as CPU, Memory, Disk Activity, Disk Usage and Network Traffic.
- Panther brings back menu separator lines.
- The DVD Player has a different interface which is much easier to use and straightforward.
- Preview is now much beefier. Lots more preferences show just how many improvements were made.
- I’m REEEAAALLY going to like Exposé. It makes it much easier to find the window you’re looking for.
- I’m very glad Apple brought back labels. They’ve improved on their implementation as well, in my opinion.
- System Profile has a new interface and is MUCH faster.
- The Finder now has a secure empty for the Trash. You can choose from 1 pass, 7 passes or 35 passes. Very nice.
Overall, this looks like one sweet upgrade. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
