I recently bought the Baraka DVD from Amazon since it was the only place I could find it. I had seen it before and was amazed at the imagery and sound. It is simply a stunning work of art.
The first time I saw it, I was in Melbourne, Australia. I figured I would get bored pretty easy since there was no script, no dialogue, no action. I was completely wrong. It was over before I knew it. I was blown away by the mix of awesome shots, amazing score and interesting portrayal of mankind and nature.
The second time I saw it, I was in Belo Horizonte, Brazil with some friends. It was just as mesmerizing the second time as the first. A friend and I tried for an hour afterwards to do the throat singing you hear in places in the film. It’s not as easy as it seems. I’ve come close to doing it, but I can never sustain it or change pitch.
And I just finished watching it for the third time tonight with my dad. I don’t think my dad liked it. All he had to say was, “It’s different.” That’s his way of saying he didn’t really like it. Oh well.
I am very glad I finally bought it. If you want to see something different than everything else coming out these days… something with awesome cinematography and sound, something with a message (one I think is a little one sided but good nonetheless), then definitely give Baraka a look.
