BBEdit 8 Released
Bare Bones has released the newest version of BBEdit, and it looks really good. I’ve already bought the upgrade.
New features include:
- Text Factories - allows you to assemble a list of text transformations that should be applied in order to a specified list of files, and can also run AppleScripts or Unix scripts on each file
- Server-side Previewing - allows you to preview pages with embedded scripts (such as PHP) in BBEdit
- Codeless Language Modules - allow for easy creation of new language modules to expand BBEdit
- Workspaces - allows you to save different workspace configurations
- Document Drawer/Navigation Bar - FINALLY, BBEdit allows you to have multiple files open in one window
- Tab Stops - draws vertical lines so it’s easier to follow indented code (It’s not code folding, but it’s better than nothing)
Overall, this is a nice upgrade to BBEdit 7. With the new features, it makes BBEdit that much nicer to work with.
Demonstrating how easy it is to create new language modules for BBEdit 8, John Gruber at Daring Fireball has already released an Apache Configuration Module!
Jon Hicks has noted that the new BBEdit icon is pretty ugly (and he’s right), so he took the time to whip up an alternative BBEdit icon which is much nicer.
Looks excellent! Now I just have to dredge up the funds to purchase a copy.
