Bent and Goldfrapp

My last post showed some of the music I’m enjoying at the moment. A couple days after I posted it, I discovered two bands that I really, really like. Both have two members, and hail from the UK.

The first one is called Bent. Their Web site is uh… different, but their music is really good. Bent’s music is electronic with great samples, beats, live instruments and vocals. It’s not your typical electronic music, for sure. The last half of “Sunday Boy” sounds a bit like Enya, but with more drive and power and almost ethereal sounding vocals.

The first song I heard from them was called “Sunday 29th” off of their “Ariels” album. I heard it on the Web radio station 1.fm - Chill Out Lounge, immediately looked it up on the iTunes store and bought it. While browsing through their music, I also bought “I Can’t Believe It’s Over”, “Sunday Boy”, “So Long Without You” and “Beautiful Otherness”. All of them are well-done.

The second band I recently discovered is Goldfrapp. The band is named after the lead singer, Alison Goldfrapp. She has an absolutely amazing voice, and she’s hot to boot! Again on Chill Out Lounge, I heard “Black Cherry”, looked it up and bought it. While browsing through their music, I also bought “Strict Machine”, “Utopia” and “Ooh La La (Phones Re-edit)”. The song “Strict Machine” is used in the new Miami Vice movie that just came out, so I imagine they’ll be getting more popular in the US.

I’m constantly amazed at how many good songs there are out there. You wouldn’t know it by listening to mainstream radio. Most popular music these days is the same old tired sound. So it’s refreshing finding bands and songs like these.

On a side note, another good song I recently discovered is “Old People Are Young Too” by Elektrofant. Very, very catchy.

You just made me lose some money. Good finds, thanks for blogging them! I have to avoid the Chillout station on di.fm, for that very reason. If you like Bent, I think you’d dig OTT and Shpongle. Blumenkraft is the album I have from the former, with “Jack’s Cheese and Bread Snack” and “Smoked Glass And Chrome” being my top two tracks on the album. Shpongle’s album that I own is Nothing Lasts…But Nothing Is Lost. They are shorter songs but the album as a whole is very cohesive from start to finish. Botanical Dimensions and Outher Shpongolia are two representative tracks.

Glad you liked the music too. I’ll check out your recommendations.

Derek, I had a chance to check out your suggestions. I really like “Smoked Glass and Chrome” by OTT. Perfect music to work by.

I liked Shpongle’s stuff too, but apparently that album is meant to be listened to as a whole. One after the other since they all flow into the next song. Did you buy the whole album? And if you did, how did you get rid of the 1 second pause iTunes puts between songs?

My best friend (as a kid) is in Bent – nice guy called Simon Mills. We have very little to be proud of in Nottingham, so we are quite proud of Bent.

The whole of England should be proud of Bent. Great music that doesn’t wear thin after playing it several times.
