Chirac Offers Formula to Tackle Iraq

A New York Times article spells out the basics of Jacques Chirac’s plan on how to deal with Iraq.  I agree with Chirac that we should make a deadline of a few weeks to allow UN weapons inspectors back into Iraq and if they don’t allow it, go in with military force.  I think the weapons inspectors should also be given access to whatever they need, and if it isn’t allowed, then military action is taken.  The last time the inspectors were denied access, they just left and that was it.

I also think there is enough evidence to tie Iraq with al-Qaeda as well as its support for terrorist activities.  I disagree with Chirac that if the US ousted Saddam it would be a “recipe for chaos in global affairs.” If the US presents enough evidence to prove their point, and the Security Council still doesn’t support military action, then the US has the right to oust Saddam.  China has no evidence pointing to Taiwan building weapons of mass destruction aimed at China or its allies, or at least hasn’t presented any.  India and Pakistan don’t threaten each others’ allies with bio or chemical weapons.  And they’ve already shown the world they won’t get into a nuclear war.

How will allowing a madman like Saddam to build nuclear weapons capabilities and more chemical and biological weapons keep the Middle East stable?  If it weren’t Saddam in control over there, this wouldn’t be as big an issue.  But Saddam has proven himself to be a complete whacko with little care for the Muslim countries around him.
