I downloaded Apple’s new “turbo browser”, Safari. It’s in beta stage right now, so there are some bugs and missing features, but my initial impression is a good one. It IS fast. It’s not that much faster than Chimera, but is noticeably faster than IE and Mozilla. The interface is simplistic, but I like it that way. It has built-in pop-up blocking which is a big plus. I already like the Snapback button in the toolbar which allows me to jump back to the root domain of any site I’m visiting with one click. I also like the simple bug reporting button which is a cool way to send bug reports to Apple about Safari. I’ve already sent a couple in.
Some features that I wish it had were tabbed browsing (ala Mozilla, Chimera, Netscape), the ability to import favorites from IE, Mozilla or Chimera and a more intuitive bookmark manager. Right now, it’s not easy to create new folders within folders. In fact, it’s a pain in the butt the way it’s set up now. If it added or fixed these features, it would become my default browser, but for now, I’ll stick with Chimera.
