Countries of the World

How many countries of the world can you name without looking at a map or cheating and looking at a list? How many can you name in just ten minutes?

There are 245 countries that can be named in this quiz. All there is on the page is a giant timer and a textbox. Enter in the names of the countries as you think of them and it will automatically add it to the list if it’s spelled correctly and you use the proper name. I can already tell you “North Korea” doesn’t work.

Out of 245 possible, I was able to name 92. Not too bad, but I was hoping to do better. I couldn’t recall the names of very many countries in the Caribbean, central Africa, eastern Europe and the Pacific islands.

How many were you able to name?

Wow… I suck – only got 60. But then again I went to school in Germany and even if I can name the country I don’t necessarily know how to spell it in English. Take Ireland and Canada as an example… I just typed Irland and Kanada… oh well. wink

Oh… and if they really wanted to stick to the countries true names – not just what people call them – Switzerland should be Confoederatio Helvetica. Or what did you think CH stands for? grin

I only got 67. Ten minutes just wasn’t long enough. :(

I didn’t know that’s what CH stood for. You learn something new every day. Which also explains the name of the font, I guess.

60 countries isn’t anything to frown on. I couldn’t name AND spell correctly 10 countries in German.

You’re right, Betty, 10 minutes isn’t long enough at all.

101. Though I couldn’t resist typing in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, I sort of shied away from countries with long names that aren’t that easy to type, so that helped. I gave a shot at “Macedonia”, but when it didn’t take that, I decided I wouldn’t risk the chance that typing “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” still wouldn’t give them what they were looking for, so I moved on.

But looking at the list of “correct” answers… Abkhazia? South Ossetia? Did Russians write this test? ‘cause everybody else considers those places part of Georgia. And can anybody find French Guiana?

I also like how “proper names” are insisted on—yet the name for the US is just “United States”.

Yeah, I also noticed the “proper name” for the US wasn’t correct.

I didn’t even bother going through the list of countries I missed. It would only have made me ticked about the obvious ones I should’ve remembered.

Stuff like this is the reason I love your blog buddy! I got 80 countries.. I thought I was rockin and rollin, but then I started blanking out and couldn’t think of the names of obvious countries like yemen, uruguay and paraguay etc..

btw good call not looking at the list of what you forgot, it really ticked me off wink
