Creative I-Trigue 3400 Speakers

One of the very few cons to getting a new Intel iMac was my venerable iSub subwoofer no longer worked. It was still recognized in the System Profiler, but it wouldn’t show up in the Sound preference pane. I tried plugging it into every USB port I had, but nothing worked. I tried looking for drivers around the Web with no luck. I even tried finding the driver in my old iMac’s files, again without any luck.

The other day I read that Apple is no longer supporting the iSub, apparently because it’s five years old or something. It’s a great subwoofer and still looks classy next to any computer, but Apple decided it was just too old for some reason. Harman/Kardon doesn’t make drivers for it, so I knew I would never see it work with my iMac.

Creative's I-Trigue 3400 speakersI went looking for a replacement system, and eventually settled on a white set of I-Trigue 3400 speakers from Creative. They had really good reviews and a decent price tag. There was also a $30 mail-in rebate with them for a couple days at Amazon, so I sprung for them.

They came in today about four days before they were scheduled to arrive, which was nice. They were a cinch to setup and they really sound good. I really like the oversized volume knob that comes with it. Not only can you control the main volume with it, but you can adjust how much bass you want to hear as well. Plus, there are headphone and microphone jacks on the side. No more blindly feeling around the back of the iMac to plug in my headphones anymore.

The subwoofer can REALLY crank out the bass. It can rattle the windows next to my desk at about 75% volume. I’m afraid to take it to 100%. I would hate to blow a speaker the day I got them.

The satellite speakers are attractive, fit in well with the iMac and sound great, but tend to drop the middle a bit. That is easily fixed by adjusting the equalizer settings in iTunes.

Overall, I’m quite happy with them and would recommend them to anyone else looking for a decent set of computer speakers without breaking the bank.

Were you able to get a headphones and mic to work with the remote volume knob thing?

Yes. In fact, I’ve been using headphones with the remote volume knob quite a bit in the last several days. I’ve had no problems at all.

The headphones work fine. But I was thinking that I could plug in a headset (phones & mic) into the volume knob thing. But the aux-in doesn’t go back into the PC so it won’t receive any mic input.

Oops. By headphones I meant headset… I’ve been using them on WoW/Ventrilo without a problem. I’m using it on a Mac though, so I’m not sure what settings need to be changed on a PC to get them to work. I wish I could be more helpful.
