When I got my free, color iPod last week, I realized that my old Apple Dock wasn’t going to work with the new iPod. I was going to sell my old iPod to a friend anyway, so I gave him the dock to go with it.
I wanted a new dock, but I didn’t want to spend $30-$40 for something that’s just going to hold my iPod off the desktop. I remembered reading about others who had made their own docks, so I decided I’d do the same thing. I ended up spending only $2 and about 30 minutes of my time before I had a perfectly working dock.
I already had a Belkin leather case for when I use my iPod in the car, so I figured I could make something that would work with it. I looked around in all our junk, but couldn’t find anything that would work right. Then my dad suggested using a simple, L-shaped picture frame. I had an old, clear plastic one, but it was too flimsy to hold up the iPod. So I jumped in my car, headed to Wal-mart and bought a black, metal 4x6 frame.
When I got home, I brought it out to our shop to work on it. Using a padded vise, a drill with three different size bits, a Dremel and a black magic marker (to cover up little mistakes), I ended up with what you see in the picture. I made a hole with a drop-notch for the leather case, and another hole in the bottom for the cable to go through. Nothing fancy, but it works perfectly. I can leave the iPod in the leather case all the time now. If I want to bring the iPod with me in the car, I just disconnect the cable and lift it out of the dock. It couldn’t be easier.
You can also take a gander at the back of the dock.
I don’t know the Quenya language. You’d have to go to a site like Parma Tyelpelassiva or Ardalambion.
Looks cool, Chris!
Did you factor in how much it cost you in gas, to run all the way down to Walmart and back?
