When I first moved to Austin, I signed up with Verizon Wireless. I had heard good things about them, and knew I didn’t want to go with Cingular.
I ended up getting an LG VX8100. It’s a nice phone, nothing too fancy. It has a nice built-in camera, bluetooth and a nice, bright screen. I also got a bluetooth headset from Jabra and they work flawlessly together.
One thing that I didn’t like on the phone was the selection of ringtones. They suck, and there’s no easy way to get new ones without paying money for them.
I have a decent music collection with plenty of songs I could use as ringtones, but I couldn’t figure out a way to transfer the MP3s to my phone. I connected my Mac to the phone via Bluetooth easily enough, but the phone wouldn’t let me copy any files over to it.
I did a little research, and found an ass-ugly (as in baboon ass, not Keyra Augustina ass) program called BitPim. The interface is quite nasty, but right now it’s the most beautiful app on my Mac. That’s because it’s allowed me to finally copy over custom ringtones to my phone. And it was quite easy too.
First, you should have already connected your phone to your Mac via Bluetooth or cable. You should also have a 10-15 second long MP3 clip ready. You can create this with a program like Audacity. It’s free and easy-to-use, so what have you got to lose?
Once you open BitPim, go to the Preferences. I manually selected the Phone Type and then did a search for the right Com Port. Since I had connected via Bluetooth, I chose that port and clicked OK. I then selected “ringers” in the main window and downloaded the existing ones off of the phone onto my Mac. You do that by clicking the little icon with the green arrow pointing away from the phone. I then right-clicked on “ringers” and selected “Add to ringers…”. I selected the MP3 clip I wanted to add and it showed up in the BitPim main window. Next click on the little icon that shows the green arrow pointing to the phone. A little window will pop up asking what you want to transfer back to the phone and whether you want to add new files or overwrite all pre-existing files. Just select “Ringtone” and “Add” and you’re good to go! Use your phone to select the new file and wow your friends with your cool custom ringtone.
By the way, it’s just as easy to add a new wallpaper. I’ve now got a nice wallpaper of Elena Anaya on my main screen.
Thanks a lot for the info, I have the same phone and have been looking for 2 years of how to customize my ringtones. I even bought softwares to create ringtones but they mess up the ringtones from Get It Now. I’ll try what you said, but I need a certain cable right in order to transfer ringtones can you tell me what kind I need.
Thanks, really appreciate
Well crap! I’ve been wanting a ringtone for my phone too. I wish I had a Mac! Dangit! I’ve been trying to look up how to download a ringtone but the Verizon Wireless sites I go to keep saying I can’t download any to my phone for some reason. I checked out my phone options on the Verizon website and it says my phone can download ringtones. So I don’t know what the heck to do. I guess I’m stuck with the crappy ringtones already on the phone. Sucks….
