Dashboard vs. Konfabulator

I admit that when I first saw pictures of Dashboard, I immediately thought of Konfabulator and that Apple must’ve bought them out.  Later, when I found out Apple hadn’t bought them out, I thought Apple had outright copied Konfabulator without even an acknowledgment.

However, after seeing how Dashboard worked and was implemented in Steve Job’s keynote address, my opinion changed.  Dashboard looked like Konfabulator done right, and that was just in appearance.  Under the hood, it was done quite a bit differently, and much better, in my opinion.

Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I’ve tried using Konfabulator (on two different occasions), and ditched it both times because the widgets were too clunky, too fugly and took up system resources.  Dashboard is built into the system, unlike Konfabulator, so it should run much better and not be a CPU hog.

John Gruber has posted an excellent article about the whole Dashboard vs. Konfabulator controversy.  It explains a little about the history of widgets within Apple’s OS and the differences between Dashboard and Konfabulator.

Go read it if you’re interested in all of this.
