I just got my DSL connection worked out about 15 minutes ago. It was something simple, as usual.
The Alltel tech guy checked the lines from our house to the DSLAM, and it showed a perfect connection. So he moved into the computer room, and checked it again and got nothing. His first thought was the line, of course, but it wasn’t the problem. He asks if we have all other phones on the same line using the DSL filters. I said yes. Then suddenly Dad remembers that our satellite box uses that line! I didn’t know that and would never have guessed it!
With a DSL connection, if you’ve got any other phones or fax machines or whatever connected to the same line, then you need to use a special filter. If you don’t, it’ll “burn up” your other machines. I knew we had four phones connected to the line, so I put four filters on the phones. I didn’t put one on the satellite outlet. So once we were given a new filter for it, voila! A fat, 76k per second connection! It’s just slightly faster than dial-up…
Anyway, I’m in Internet geek heaven right now.
Welcome to the fast lane.
