ExpressionEngine 1.4 Released

ExpressionEngine 1.4 is out and it’s looking very nice. Paul and Rick have put in a lot hours (and headaches I’m sure) getting this version out the door.

There are over 70 new features with this release! The System Administration page has been cleaned up nicely. EE now supports advanced conditionals within your templates. That should make it much easier to make complex pages. You can also have custom fields pull in data from other custom fields in other weblogs or even the gallery. Entry versioning so you can save older versions of your entries. That would come in handy for a couple of my clients. You can now edit multiple entries at the same time in the control panel! The list goes on and on.

I think the biggest new feature is extensions though. ExpressionEngine now has hooks throughout the code that allows 3rd party developers to extend the looks/functionality of EE without hacking the core files. I’ve got a couple clients that are locked into older versions of EE because they wanted me to hack the core files to gain some custom functionality. With extensions, I simply make a new extension which the client can enable/disable through the new extensions manager. There are already a few extensions available, but I’m sure the floodgates will open when the developers get their hands on it.

Another major announcement was the $50 drop in price on the personal license and the release of a “core” version. The core version is a free, stripped down (yet still powerful) version of EE. I think this is an excellent move on pMachine’s part. There’s already some talk of people switching from Wordpress and MoveableType.

Overall, EE 1.4 looks really nice.
