In my last post, I mentioned that it seemed to be taking an eternity for my new domain to get registered. Well, I was correct. I contacted my new host about why it was taking so long, and they wrote back saying they had never submitted my domain for registration because they never received my invoice! What I want to know is why then do I have space on their servers, can access control panels and view Web stats for my site, can ftp in and update anything I want and they still don’t see me as having an account?! Idiots! Luckily, I had saved my invoice as a PDF and emailed it back to them. Unfortunately, when I try to connect to their Web site, I get a “connection refused” response. Lovely.
One of my recent projects was redesigning and programming the local newspaper’s Web site. We got them all situated with a new host and the site was up and running smoothly. I had written the whole thing in PHP so that it would be much easier for the newspaper to update its own site. Well, now I get an email from the editor saying that their Web site can’t be accessed anymore. I check it out, and I’m told the newspaper’s Web account has been suspended because we did over 30 GB of traffic in 2 weeks!! How in the world is that possible?! The entire Web site is less than 200 k, so we somehow had over 150,000 visitors view the ENTIRE Web site in about 2 weeks? Riiiight. The entire population of the town the newspaper is in is about 5,000. So either the entire town is VERY keen on keeping up with local news or we’ve got a mess up on the host’s side.
On top of it all, when I try to log into the site’s control panel to view the stats and access logs, I get a permission denied error. So I called their tech support, and asked for a record of our access logs and stats. They said they’d email it to me, and 2 hours later they still haven’t. I’m thinking they’re going to lose some business.
And on top of that, I may have lost a project I thought I had in the bag. Wonderful…
