I’m not a big fan of anime. Most of it looks like crap… poorly drawn and a boring or stupid story. However, there is one anime movie I’ve seen that is excellent, and that’s Ghost in the Shell.
I first saw it in ‘96, but it’s been out longer than that. Not only is it extremely well done cinematically, but the story is really interesting. In fact, if by the end of it you don’t have a lot of questions about what it means to be human running around in your head, then you must be brain-dead.
It has amazing cinematography. You can see how it influenced later movies like The Matrix. Just about every scene would make a nice photo by itself. The only other movie I can think of that’s like that is Bladerunner, one of my all-time favorite movies.
Now it seems there’s a sequel called Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. I watched the Japanese trailer, and it looks absolutely stunning technically. I couldn’t understand the Japanese voice-over, but it looked very interesting. When it makes it here to the States, I will try to get myself a copy.
I’ve never seen Spirited Away, but from what I remember of the trailer, it looked pretty good. I might have to hunt it down and watch it.
There was another movie that looked really good out a few months ago in Japan, but I don’t think it ever made it to distribution over here. It’s called Casshern. I posted about it earlier here: http://www.chrisruzin.net/index.php/entry/casshern/
Technically, it’s not anime either, but looks like it’s worth checking out.
How about Spirited Away? Though technically not an anime per se.
