Google Ads

Well, I decided I would try out Google’s AdSense.  I’m not sure if I’m going to make much money through them, but I thought I’d give it a shot anyway.  I applied yesterday and got an email from them today saying I had been approved.

I’ve tried to choose a layout and palette that isn’t in-your-face.  Let me know what you think.

I have been trying to add Google’s AdSense to my new blog (it’s all new to me, php especially!) with mixed results. It’s easy enough to add the Google JavaScript to my main template, but then it’s not accessible to Google’s bot.

How did you do it?

All I did was use their forms to get the code I needed and pasted it into its own Expression Engine template. I can then call it from any other template. Nothing complicated, but I’m not sure if it would act any different with another blog system.

Thanks for the quick reply – how do you “call it” from another template? I am quite a newbie….

You would use the EE tag embed=“group/template”. So if your group was called “extras”, and the Google ads template was called “ads”, you would use embed=“extras/ads”. Put curly brackets around the tags. I can’t because it won’t show the tag if I do.

Hope that helps!

Thanks!…I added (embed=weblog/ads) with curly brackets, and the Google AdSense ads now get included on my pages.

The new problem: I have a veterinary professional site, but the ads look like law software companies so far. They’re not public service ads anymore, so I think I am making headway. Did you do anything to direct the Google bot to your content?

No, I didn’t do anything. It takes the Google bot a little bit to crawl everything, and when it’s done the ads will be a little more relevant. Even after it’s done, there are still going to be ads that don’t really fit the content. I don’t know if there’s any way to improve on it on our side or not.

Got a URL for the site?

Yeah, I am a little embarrassed that it is just an EE template, but I had to start somewhere:) I have done a lot with HTML & Flash sites, but PHP & MySQL are completely new to me.

You realize that by asking people to click on your google ads your violating their rules and if they find out your account will be cancelled and any money you have not been paid will be gone. if you check you will find they have done it to lots of people for violations much smaller than yours.

Darrell, I didn’t ask people to randomly click on my ads. If you had actually read what I said, you would see I said “if you see an ad that interests you, then feel free to click it”.

I’m sure Google appreciates rules policemen, like yourself, but you really need to ease up.
