I don’t know how I missed it, but this site turned five years old back on February 21. That’s nearly 62 months with 1452 posts and 3465 comments as of today.
After reading last year’s post on the anniversary, I realized the frequency of new posts is about the same. Maybe five posts a month. That’s not much, but I don’t have much else to write about.
I think I need to re-evaluate the focus of this site. When I first started, blogs were just starting to boom. Everyone and their dog was starting one and writing about all kinds of mundane, pointless things. Kind of like the whole Twitter nonsense going on right now, but worse. I also posted about random topics, but tried to never get as random as what I had for lunch that day.
A while back, I started a side blog for random topics I thought were cool, but didn’t warrant a longer post. Things like cool software, fun online games, handy tutorials and funny videos are added to it leaving my main blog for other topics I feel need more discussion. This reduced the frequency of posts drastically.
My Web traffic has risen compared to the early days, but hit a plateau a couple years back and has hovered there since. I attribute this to my posting about random stuff rather than focusing on a couple topics and sticking to them. The thing is, I’m not sure what topics I should focus on and whether I even need to focus at all. I’m not maintaining this site to become a traffic whore, but I also don’t want to bore people to tears.
Some topics that I post about often already are ExpressionEngine, anything Mac-related and music I enjoy. I’m not sure if there’s anything else I’m interested in enough to post about. Focusing more on these topics would mean posting a little more often and making the articles worth reading. Perhaps I could start posting EE tips/tricks or something, but there’s already several sites doing so.
So I guess I’d like to hear back from the handful of readers who’ve stuck around. Should I focus on a couple topics or keep things random?
It all depends on who you want your audience to be. (I can hear Landa Cope saying it now…”start with your audience!”)
Random stuff is fine for me because I know you personally, I know your training and your, ahem…worldview…so there’s a context for your opinions. In short: you’re a friend and I’ll listen to you.
I won’t listen to just anyone. And I don’t think anyone who doesn’t know you would listen to random opinions either. However, the blogs of people I keep going to, that I don’t know, are those blogs who have focused on a subject…technology usually.
So, it just depends on who you want coming to your site. I’ve enjoyed it. It’s fun hearing about the stuff in your life…death of your Xbox and Netflix movies, etc.
I think I enjoyed the random variety of your posts. Some were completely pointless to me, while most others were very interesting.
That’s my random opinion.
