Hiking again

Yesterday, I went hiking again, up near the same place as last time.  This time, instead of climbing up a mountain, we hiked a 2.5 mile trail around a small lake.  We also passed by the small dam that makes the lake.

The weather was perfect.  A cold-front had come through the day before and dropped temperature by about 8 degrees.  And since we were up even higher, it felt awesome.  There was a nice cool breeze blowing through the trees and an icy stream flowing near us most of the time.

After that hike, we ate some lunch and headed off for another part of the forest.  On the way, we stopped at an overlook of a very pretty valley.  It was so quiet there, very peaceful.  I had my binoculars and was looking around trying to see any black bears, but I never found one.  We ended up near the headwaters of the Saline River.  Where we were, it wasn’t much bigger than a creek.  And it was pretty cold.  It’s fed by freshwater springs coming up out of the ground nearby.  We had to step over a couple while we were hiking.  We started hiking through the Saline, trying to find a good swimming hole.  We ended up at this place that was just over waist deep and had all kinds of small fish and crawdads in it.  It was very refreshing.

While we were driving back, we were coming down off of this hill on the highway.  About half a mile ahead of us was a pickup hauling several tons of hay.  All of the sudden, this Chevy car whips out from behind it, trying to pass.  I figured the driver would see us coming and get back behind the truck, but nooooooo.  They dawdled along, and we had to swerve over onto the shoulder, completely out of our lane in order not to hit this person!  The truck hauling the hay had to slam on their brakes in order to avoid a wreck.  While we were swerving out of the way, I noticed it was an old grandma driving.  She probably didn’t even see us until we were right on her.  Even though she barely missed us and caused the hay truck to slam on his brakes, she still kept poking along and made the car several hundred yards behind us swerve onto the shoulder as well!  What in the world is this woman doing driving?!  She almost caused 3 wrecks within one minute!  Hopefully, the hay truck took down her license plate number and called the cops.  She’s going to end up killing someone.
