House of Flying Daggers

Scenes from House of Flying Daggers

I just finished watching House of Flying Daggers. My reason for renting it was because I think Zhang Ziyi is gorgeous, but the movie is amazing on its own. There aren’t too many Western movies made these days that are so epic in scope, so painstakingly put together as movies like this one. Hero is another movie in this vein.

If you were to take a still from any moment in the movie, it would make a beautiful picture. The cinematography is some of the best I’ve seen in any movie. The vivid colors and scenery add so much to this movie.

I won’t go into detail about the story, but it’s basically a tragedy involving a love triangle. It seems that many epic, Chinese love stories are tragedies. Instead of ruining the story, the tragedy made it a much better one. That’s another thing that separates movies like this from so many American or even Western movies. Movies don’t have to always end on a happy note to be good. Lovers don’t always live happily ever after. About the only movie that can get away with that is The Princess Bride.

House of Flying Daggers is definitely one of my favorite movies. If you’re a fan of Chinese epics, great cinematography, fantastic fight scenes or just Zhang Ziyi’s gorgeous looks, you should check this movie out.
