I’ve been wanting to get a CD-RW drive for a while now, but haven’t really had the money to get something decent. While I was working with the De Queen Bee, I noticed they had just purchased an Iomega ZipCD burner. It was working fine with their Macs, but they’re running OS 9 still. I figured OS X might support it, so I asked to borrow it and try it out at home here. When I got it back home, I hooked it up and got nada. All the software that comes with it is for OS 9, so it’s useless for me. I checked out Apple’s Web site for a list of supported drives, and the ZipCD wasn’t supported. =[
So… I took it back with a heavy heart. Not really. But I did take it back. Anyway… they also had a QPS Firewire CD-RW drive just sitting there in it’s box. It had suddenly quit on them a while back. I asked them if they would be willing to sell it to me, and Mark, the editor, told me that it if I wanted to front the $25 for a Radio Shack guy to check it out, I could take it with. Well, the Radio Shack guy turned out to be a bad choice. Whenever I talk to him on the phone, it sounds like he’s just spouting off a bunch of crap mixed with some jargon. I will never again take anything to Radio Shack for fixing.
When I got it back, I brought it home and took it apart. It was out of warranty, so I wasn’t doing anything stupid. I had it all the way down to it’s board and motors, and never figured out how to fix it. At one point while I was playing around with it, it started working again. But as soon as I put it down on the desk, it stopped working again! I tried for about 1 hour working on it and eventually gave up. I put it all back together and back in its case. You can’t even tell I opened it except for a little “void” sticker on the inside of the case.
Someday I’ll eventually buy a CD burner and a digital camera. Someday…
