Someone in Japan has put together a page showing the difference between Japanese Emoticons and American ones. The main difference is that Japanese Emoticons are 2 bytes while American are 1. Because of that, there are many more Japanese variations.
It’s worth checking out if you’re ever chatting with an Asian friend, which I do every now and then. (*^_^*)
Don’t know if anyone’s still paying attention to this thing or not, but I have some answers for you anyway, and nothing better to do. So, here we go:
(_;)
This represents the anime ‘sweatdrop’. Sweatrops most often mean sheepishness, embarrasment, or exasperation. The eyes of the character usually determine which this is:
_;
In this version, the character has ‘happy eyes’, and it basically means the person is feeling sheepish or embarrassed (there’s a fine line between the two anyway, which is often blurred. 9_9 —Oh, by the way, this is one of my own creation. It’s eye-rolling.)
_;
In this one, the eyes are narrowed or closed, indicating exasperation, at someone who has said or done something strange, foolish, or obnoxious.
¬_¬;
In a third version, the character is giving a sidelong glance/glare at someone. It means pretty much the same as (_;) , but I tend to think of it as having stronger meaning.
>_<
This face can be used several ways. Most often anger (eyes narrowed or clenched in anger), it can also indicate embarrassment (thus squeezing your eyes closed to shut out the world), and stress. It’s sometimes accompanied with a sweatdrop – >.<; – to exaggerate and intensify its meaning.
_ I hope this is helpful to you, if you’re still interested. (_ = Happy!)
