Junior, the youngest of our cats, will most likely die within a couple days, if not tonight sometime. We’re not sure what the deal is, but he is very dehydrated and gagging. He’s having trouble breathing and looks really bad.
This isn’t the first time he’s been like this. We’ve taken him to two different vets, and neither can figure out what his problem is. The last time we took him to the vet, we left him for the weekend. They gave him an IV and all kinds of other medicines, did a ton of tests and barely got him better. We took him home and gave him his medicine for as long as we could until he wouldn’t take it anymore.
For a while he was beginning to gain weight and look healthy again. He would go out into the field and hunt like he always did before. Out of the blue the other day he began looking really bad again. Now he’s looking the worst he’s ever looked.
It’s sad. My sister found him stranded in the middle of the road, frightened to death. She brought him home and he became great play-buddies with our other tom, Tuff. He gained weight and looked really good. I was pretty upset with him when he pissed all over the inside of my car when I took him to get neutered, but overall he’s been a good cat. Then several months ago, he came home limping really bad. We thought he broke a toe, like Tuff did, and it would eventually get better, but he got worse. We took him to the vet and he couldn’t find any broken bones, but he noticed Junior’s muscles looked wrong. We think he either got hit by a car or fell off the fence and got his leg caught in the chicken wire on the way down. Either way, he’s never been the same since.
If he’s not dead by tomorrow, we’re going to take him to the vet and have him put down. It’s cruel to keep him alive like this. We just put our dog to sleep a couple weeks ago, and now it looks like we’re going to do the same for Junior. It’s no fun having to put down a couple pets within a couple weeks.
10/6: We put Junior to sleep this morning. It was hard knowing I’d never see him again, but it was harder watching him die slowly and painfully like that.
Yeah, it’s weird to come home and not see him sauntering up wanting to be loved on. He was the most friendly of the cats. Tuff is the most mellow, but he doesn’t like to be loved on too much. Or only when he wants it. Oreo (aka Methuselah) is 900 years old and is crotchety. Junior loved attention and liked being loved on.
Junior was usually the most friendly of the cats. Tuff is picky I think. Oreo is just old and normally wants to be left alone. Remember when I was there she wouldn’t leave me alone! She was always with me or on my bed and I couldn’t close her out of the room for any time at all or she would bang on the door and yowl. It was so funny. Well, not early in the morning-that’s not funny. But anyway, Junior was my special guy. Remember when I brought him home? I tried to hide him from Mom and Dad. His ears were like three times bigger than his head! Hah-hah! He finally grew into them. How are the other cats taking it? Wasn’t Junior and Oreo getting along? I thought Mom said she would groom him sometimes.
I’m going to miss my sweet boy.
