Lance Armstrong not a great athlete?

Ron Borges is a sports writer for MSNBC.  In this article, he says that Lance Armstrong isn’t a great athlete and that the Rockettes are more athletic than Lance could ever be.  What makes Ron more of a moron, is that he goes on to diminish not only the sport of cycling, but golf as well.

It’s also interesting to note that at the very bottom of the article, it says that Ron covers boxing and the NFL.  So two guys who stand in a ring punching each other must be greater athletes than a man who rides his bicycle hundreds of miles through mountains in only a few hours, several days in a row and wins it four times in a row.  Yep… Ron Borges is a moron.

I have to agree with you that Borges is a moron. I also must point out that as someone who has both boxed and cycled competitively, they are both very hard sports. Sure, you occasionally find two bears dancing in a ring, but when two guys show up to fight and win then we’re talking a brutal, tough sport. Cycling requires an even higher level of preparation than boxing to be successful. How long did Mike Tyson get by with minimal training before Buster Douglas knocked him out. You do that in the Tour de France and you won’t even finish the race. The worst part is that Borges tries to compare someone like Armstrong to baseball and football players. Some of these guys couldn’t ride a bike half the distance that Armstrong does or make it up just one of those mountains even if their lives depended on it. Borges even alludes to drug use. Has he paid attention to the current crop of home run kings lately? Cyclists are the most frequently tested athletes in the world and Armstrong has never failed a drug test ever. Can other athletes say the same? Borges clearly doesn’t understand the sport of cycling so he criticizes it. Borges needs to try competing in this sport just once and then, after being released from the hospital, start working on his retraction and apologize.
