Life in a nature preserve

A little while ago, a friend from England wrote to me and said it sounded like I lived in a nature preserve because of how much roadkill we have around here and the kinds of animals that have run in front of my car (luckily I haven’t hit any… knock on wood).

This got me thinking, so I decided to make a list of all the interesting animals we have in this area.  The fact that I have zero social life helped me to compile this list in record time.

• Armadillos
• Skunks
• Rabbits
• Coyotes
• Opossums
• Raccoons
• Wolves
• Bears
• Alligators
• Bald eagles
• Mountain lions
• Lynxes (or is that just lynx?)
• Bobcats
• Deer
• Wild pigs and turkeys
• Rattlesnakes
• Copperheads
• Cottonmouths (Water moccasins)
• Coral snakes
• Rednecks who swerve to hit the above animals on the roads

Just about every one of the above animals you can get up close to and touch because they’ve been flattened by some sort of automobile on the highway.  This doesn’t take into account the 5 billion stray dogs and cats out here or the occasional cow or horse that gets loose on the highway.

So Paul, if you’re reading this, I hope this gives you a better idea of life in the country over here.

Those water moccassins are insidious evil creatures. They are one of the few snakes that can lift most of their body out of the water and join you in your boat. They should be called Tipacanoe snakes.
