Lifestyles of the Poor and Obscure

The Weekly Standard has an article on Gar Smith, editor of the Earth Island Institute.  In it, they quote some of his statements like:

I have to been villages in Africa that had a vibrant culture and great communities that were disrupted and destroyed by the introduction of electricity.

I see… so it’s evil electricity that was the problem, and not the misuse of it that “destroyed” those villages.  Here’s an even better quote…

the amount of water used to produce a pound of hamburger meat is probably enough to sustain a third world village for half a year.

Give me a break!  Where did he pull this statisitic from?!  Nevermind… I can guess.  If this is the kind of nutcase that is prevalent at these kind of summits, then no wonder the rest of the world is becoming disillusioned.
