For all the anti-Bushies out there who are crying in their caviar about how we aren’t serious about Afghanistan or haven’t really committed to rebuilding their country, please read this Washington Post article just out on a major redirection of our forces there.
It’s interesting to note also that one of the reasons the US hasn’t committed more at first is because they were wanting other nations to help in the effort. So far, hardly any nations have. But I don’t see any outrage by the Jet Set over that. I guess they can only get their kicks by ranting about how evil and incompetent the US and it’s current administration is.
No one can accurately determine the long term effects of any given situation involving nations and rebuilding. You can have general ideas, but usually only in a familiar or stable situation. Afghanistan was neither of those for our military planners.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the US did blow it on a few things over there, but in general, I think we’ve done an amazing job so far.
I think the redirection in priority is necessary and timely. Its been a year since the confict began and thus far some major problems and concerns have been raised. This article:

points to some of the failures.
Your point that the U.S has received no help from other countries is well taken, but I think that our military planners could have done better in assessing the situation with regard to the long term effects.
