I finally got around to viewing Memoirs of a Geisha. I’ve decided that any movie that has Zhang Ziyi in it is going to be a good one. Not only is she gorgeous, but she’s an excellent actress and can dance very well! Not to mention her butt-kicking martial arts moves in her other movies.
She’s not the only talented actress in the movie though. Gong Li is also very good. In fact, she plays her role so well you almost despise her at one point, but then end up pitying her.
I’m not sure why the movie got bad reviews. I guess movie critics are a negative bunch in general. What’s funny is that the last several years, if crtics hate a movie, there’s a good chance I’ll like it. They’re not always wrong, but I pretty much ignore what they have to say now. If it looks interesting, I’ll watch it.
The movie itself is based on the book of the same title which is basically the story of a famous Japanese geisha back in the ‘30s and ‘40s. At times it’s sad, other times funny and well done throughout. The cinematography isn’t as spectacular as some other of Zhang’s movies, like Hero and House of Flying Daggers, but it’s good nonetheless. When I start buying DVDs for my collection again, those two and Memoirs of a Geisha will be on my “To Get” list.
I rented the movie yesterday and I thought the movie was really boring. I read the book in December and like usual, the book is much better. A lot of things were different and there was so much information missing that some things didn’t make sense. I guess I was picturing things differently as I read the book. It was an OK movie, just really slow.
