Mohammad Khatami on violence and war

In this NY Times article titled “Iranian President Says U.S. Leaders ‘Misused’ Sept. 11”, the Iranian president, Mohammad Khatami, spoke out against Bush and his cabinet saying that we abused the tragedy of 9/11 and have created an “atmosphere of violence and war” all over the world.  He goes on to say…

To believe that you can make people submit by force is wrong. We know that this approach only brings anger and destruction.

I guess that’s why you allow an oppressive regime to still exist in Iran that controls the media, religious institutes and most of the government?  Not only that but it silences all opposition by either imprisoning or killing them.

And if I remember right, it’s the Arab fanatics that have been bombing and killing innocent people all over the world and declaring war on the US and Israel for the last few decades.  How is that not creating an atmosphere of violence and war?  It seems to me that Khatami is talking out of his butt.  If he didn’t want a worldwide atmosphere of violence and war, he should have had the backbone to stand up against the religious fanatics in his own country!  Not only him, but all the Arab countries should have cracked down on their fanatics.  Then the horrible tragedy of 9/11 wouldn’t have happened and there wouldn’t be a need to have an all out war on terrorism.
