Moscow Siege Gas Identified

The US has identified the gas used by the Russians to end the Chechen terrorist hijacking.  Some US doctors who have been working with some of the sick or dead hostages have said that the gas was a kind of opiate, which dulls the senses.  In too high of a dose, it can cause a coma and death because it shuts down breathing and blood circulation.  The Russians have refused to announce what it was because of “security reasons”.

10/30: The Russians have now admitted the gas WAS an opiate called Fentanyl.

It seems that lots of countries are trying to identify it. Not really a surprise since it’s upset a lot of people around the world. Countries are scrambling to find information on the stuff so they can ease the fears of their citizens. Thanks for linking to the Spiegel article. It’s interesting to see how other countries are responding to this.

Halothan in English is called Halothane. Halothane is a kind of opiate, as the US has suggested. It makes you sleepy, but in too high of doses shuts down circulation.
