My Name In Tengwar Quenya

I’m really interested in the Tengwar Quenya language and writing system.  I’ve tried my hand at transliterating my name into Tengwar:

My English name in Tengwar

My name translated into Quenya is Erucolindo.  That written out in Tengwar looks like:

My Quenya name in Tengwar

This is written with a cursive Tengwar font I found.  I believe this is correct, but I would need an expert to verify it.

If your name is Chris, and this is supposed to be written in Quenya mode, I would use calma instead of quesse (calma means ‘k/ch’, while quesse is more like ‘kw’ sound) and romen instead of ore (romen is always used before vowel).
In ‘Erucolindo’ you should also use romen, nor ore. And I’m not sure about long E at the beginning – should it be long vowel?

I learned yesterday about romen instead of ore. Ore should only be used when it’s before a consonant or the last letter.

Thanks for the input about calma v. quesse.

I found several Quenya fonts some years back, but they were all conflicting. And when I typed out something I knew, it looked different than what some other sites said it should. Maybe since it’s gained popularity from the movies, there are more reliable sources online?

p.s. your site isn’t giving me a cookie to remember my info. i want it to remember my info, 4 lines is a lot to type smile

There are definitely a lot of sources online. I posted a list of them here:

Hello Chris!! I’ve been trying to translate my name in tengwar, and I just wanted to see whether or not you would get the same as I did. Also, i’m having a bit of trouble turning “LEXSIE” in tengwar, it’s the x which makes it all the lot harder! If you could be of any helps, I’d appreciate it! Thanks!

I just wanted to let you know that it is in fact written wrong. You have the right idea for the words, but the letters are wrong from the font. For one, there are no capitols in tengwar. Watch, type in your elvish font and type a capitol A and a lowercase A and see the huge difference, these are infact different letters. Here is a link to the tengwar alphabet that will help alot: http://science.csustan.edu/JTB/BOOKS/HOBBIT/Hobbit-index.htm

And here is a link to a translator so the computor will understand the words your trying to say. My name in Tenwar is Maeglin, which looks like t#`VjT5 to the computor. but the letters are what they are supposed to be from that random text. The program you need is called Tengscribe: http://hem.passagen.se/mansb/at/tengscribe.htm

Chris's gravatar Chris United States November 24, 2003

Maeglin, I know it’s written wrong. These were some of the first Tengwar writings I ever did. I know better now, but left it as is because my site is linked to from some other Tengwar sites for beginners. It allows new students to see my mistakes and learn from them. Check out some more examples of my Tengwar, and you can see my progression.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound rude. I didn’t know that this was so old. I was just trying to help, and I hope those links I gave help beginners too. Thanks for the correction! smile

Chris's gravatar Chris United States November 24, 2003

No problem. You weren’t being rude at all. Just trying to help, right? I would’ve done the same thing.

I guess technically, these posts aren’t that old, but I have learned heaps more about Tengwar in several different modes since then.

Hello. I just thought it might be helpful to give a few pointers on how to use the font on the computer, for people who are unfamiliar. The program tengscribe is not always correct, and with a bit of practice, it’s easy to do it on your own.

First of all, one should make themself familiar with the phonetic values, which can be found at http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/4948/tengwar/quenya.htm which gives the correct english equivalents. The site is also very helpful in explaining the uses of the tehtar (the vowel symbols that are placed above the consonants).

Using the table at this website (or for that matter, in the LotR appendix), one can easily find the matching symbols on the keyboard: the first column corresponds to the first row, the one beginning 1, 2, 3, and the second column corresponds to the second row, beginning q, w, e, etc.

The tehtar are available once the shift key is pressed, and the vowels A, E, I, O, and U are the keys #, $, %, ^, and &, respectively. In order to get the correct placement over the consonant, follow down diagonally to the right for a new position. For example, #, E, D, and C all give the “a” tehta, but each in a different position. experiment to find the ones that work best.

Hope this was a help to some people!

Trying to find tengwar font translator into English can some one help me please

Thanks JJ

Chris Ruzin's gravatar Chris Ruzin United States March 25, 2004

JJ, do you mean something that can translate things written in an English Tengwar mode converted into regular English?

There are several Tengwar modes, so some of them won’t be translatable over the Web.

How did you translate your name Chris into Erucolindo?

Chris's gravatar Chris United States January 2, 2005

Chris is short for Christopher, which means Christ- or God-bearer. God-bearer in Quenya is Erucolindo.

PJ, which language (English, Sindarin or Quenya) do you want it in? That’s pretty important to know.
