My Own Web Server

Call me slow, but I FINALLY got around to setting up Apache, PHP and MySQL on my iMac.  I downloaded and ran the OS X PHP Installer from Mark Liyanage.  That gave me PHP 4.3.4 with support for many modules including cURL, PDFLib, GD, XML-RPC and many others.

Next I downloaded the OS X MySQL Installer.  This gave me the stable MySQL 4.0.18 and another installer that would make MySQL startup on any restart.

Apache was already installed with OS X, but needed to be tweaked a bit to work right with my user directories.  Then finally I needed to alter the php.ini file a bit and voila!  My own Web server to test out my projects before uploading to their final servers.  This should cut down on production time a bit.

Another benefit is it will allow me to install and use different PHP/MySQL scripts that I may find useful.  For example, I’ve already installed and am using Alex King’s Tasks, which is a nice heirarchical task manager.  I’ll be looking for other helpful scripts.

Does anyone know of any good ones I should check out?

I need to do this for my PowerBook sometime, too. I’ve heard good things about Mark’s installers, so I’m sure that’s where I’ll start. I may know pM/EE, PHP, XHTML, CSS, etc. pretty well, but I’m darn close to a rank newbie when it comes to server configuration, so if there’s something that’ll do it all for me, then all the better!
