IBM unveiled it’s new PowerPC chip called the 970. It’s a 64-bit chip that also runs 32-bit applications. Many analysts say one of the first companies using it will be Apple. The 970 is a “lite” version of IBM’s Power4 chip, which currently runs in its high-end servers. The PowerPC 970 uses only one CPU (instead of the Power4’s two), and will run at 1.8 GHz. That’s 1.8 GHz at 64-bits, not 32-bits! Unfortunately, the chip won’t go into mass production until next year. And both IBM and Apple have declined to comment on whether Apple will be using this chip. My guess is they will.
