Novell Opening Up SuSE

SuSE LogoIt looks like Novell will be opening up SuSE like Red Hat is doing with the Fedora Project. Novell has even purchased the opensuse.org domain, but it’s not up and running yet.

Of all the Linux distros I’ve tried, SuSE is in the top two (Ubuntu being the other one). I’ve tried out Mandrake, Debian, Gentoo, Fedora, Rock, Crux, YellowDog and even Darwin, FreeBSD and NetBSD. My SuSE installation got almost everything right after the first installation. The only thing that was a pain in the ass to setup was my network printer. Other than that, SuSE was very polished, easy to use and professional looking.

Novell will still package and sell both a pro version and a standard version of SuSE, but will also make it easier to download and contribute to. It already has a great community built around it, but Novell opening it up more should give it a nice boost.

8/9: openSuSE is now up and running and you can download version 10.0 beta 1 now.
