I’m sure there were some real anti-war demonstrators there at the “peace rally” in San Francisco and in other places. You know, ones who aren’t social rejects, pot-smoking hippie wannabes, communists, anarchists, kids out having a good time or just plain whackos. To those who really do have a point of view that’s within reality and really disagree with the war, then march away and more power to you.
However, those people are damaging their cause and message by letting people like the ones photographed by San Francisco blogger zombie march along with them. Most Americans see things like this, and write it off as a bunch of whackos. And going by those pictures, they’d be right.
Some of the signs are so whack, it’s mind-boggling. I didn’t see too many signs that were strictly dealing with the war and ONLY the war, which is what the rallies were supposed to be against. Most signs I saw were anti-Bush, anti-American, anti-Isreal, pro-Palestine, pro-Saddam. Suuuure it’s a “peace rally”. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
Here’s some more pics of the rally in L.A.
And LGF also has some eyebrow-raising accounts from people who were not uh… appreciated by the “peace” crowd.
My parents were strongly enough opposed to the war (before it actually started) that they decided to participate in demonstrations. They made a point of dressing conservatively, and were very disappointed at exactly the same thing you talk about here; the message will never be taken seriously if the bulk of the protesters look like a bunch of clueless, irresponsible kids, or leftist “grown-ups” who have not really grown up.
It has long been my observation, however, that sometimes the only people who will dare to say or do something that is so controversial it could damage their reputation are those who already have no reputation to lose.
