No, it’s not a knockoff of the upcoming Shrek 2, but a MacOSX newsfeed reader. It has been updated to version 2.
The interface has undergone a major overhaul. I’m still messing with it, kicking the tires, learning how it works. My initial impressions are mixed. I’m not in love with the brushed metal interface. In order to set it up to be really functional and see the info I want, the window needs to fill my entire screen!
It handles groups of feeds like Safari does bookmarks. The only thing is you can’t have sub-groups, which is a pain in the butt.
You can mark items to be read later. It has smart-groups, again like iTunes’ smart-playlists, which is a cool feature. It offers synchronization between computers. You can even check your feeds from a computer that doesn’t have Shrook. When you get back to your computer, Shrook will already know what you’ve read and what you haven’t. Of course, to do this, you’ll need to setup an account at shrook.com.
My favorite feature is that I can sort feeds by post time, so the latest headlines are at the top. Plus, Shrook updates more often than NetNewsWire. All of this adds up to a good app, but with some ugly shortcomings.
There are some bugs here and there, which I hope will be worked out quickly. If these are gone by the next update, and an option for a non-metal interface is there, then I’ll consider switching from NetNewsWire.
