Slashing Army Pay & Benefits?

Bush likes to present himself as a military-loving president, and I’m sure he is. He does have a weird way of showing it when it comes to military budget though. The Army Times has an article describing how Republicans seem to be reducing the benefits and pay of some Army personnel. I’d like to see Bush and Co. explain that.
If this is true, what strikes me as weird is that it’s the Dems who normally try every way they can to slash military funding. Now it’s the Republicans doing so. I guess that’s why you don’t hear the Dems using this as a political cudgel. They probably like it.
