I’m sure most of you are getting sick of all the “stupid” Tengwar stuff. Sorry. I’m absolutely fascinated by it, and have been spending almost all of my free time lately learning how to read and write it. I’m thinking of posting a translation every now and then, and seeing if people can figure it out. It’s a way for me to practice, and get experts to give me feedback on whether I did it correctly or not.
This is my first lengthy Tengwar transcription of an English paragraph, which is in a practice Reader. It’s done in English Common Mode:
In English, it reads:
In winter, he walked in mid-afternoon, the warmest time of the day. In summer, he was up before dawn, walking before the air got as hot and wet as a crock pot. In winter, he saw the school buses deliver children to the street corners. In summer, he saw the papers getting delivered.
OK… no more Tengwar stuff for a while. Not until I get confident enough in my abilities to start posting more examples.
Hello,i have red the trilogy,i v seen the movie(s) like 20 times…i just love everything about Tolkien and Elves…in this moment i m learning Elvish (Sindarin) it is a beautiful lanuage but i v got a problem couse i am learning it alone…
But never mind thet…would you like to write me on tengwar TOMY , ETERNAL LOVE and LOVE IS THE REASON OF LIFE…Pretty please!
Thanx…Tommy
I was looking to practice reading my new Tengwar when I found this site. Very nice, but I have some differences of opinion. When s makes the z sound, I prefer the double-curled symbols (31 and 32 in App. E) The silent e in “time” appears to me as an i. C. Tolkien used the dot for e in the silmarillion title inscription, but then the acute accent was used uniformly as an i. One last thing: I didn’t find a d in the transcription of the word children. Thank you for the good practice.
Ive been raised on Tolkien..in favt the hobit ws the firs story ever read to me as a child. So its only natural i take it farther. I have been researching Tengwar to get a couple of sayings and words, and am having extreme difficulties in translatio grammar and transcrition. If any one can lend a hand I would be forever grateful. Thank you and thank tolkien for such a beautiful text and language.
I just started writing tengwar, and wanted to put an inlay on an incent holder i made, but dont know how to write “love” in tengwar using english phonetics. Could you please e-mail me and tell me? And could you give me some good sites where i can learn how to write tengwar better. Thanks more than you can imagine
Raf
“aier” according to some sites means “little one”, which could be referring to Hobbits.
If you’re wanting to know the meaning to different Sindarin or Quenya words, there are much better sites than mine to go looking. Mellyn in Edhil, The Sindarin Dictionary and this Essay on Sindarin are all excellent resources. There are many more though. Just do a search for Sindarin or Quenya on Google and see what comes up.
kristina, if you want your brother’s name translated into Elvish, you’ll want to go to the Elfscript and/or Elfling Yahoo group (try the Elfscript one first). You’ll also want to know whether you want it translated into Sindarin or Quenya. The language mainly used in the movies is Sindarin.
marianne, same thing for you.
Hi Polona. Do you want something translated or transliterated? Meaning, do you want to change the language of those sentences into Sindarin/Quenya or do you just want to swap out the letters for Tengwar equivalents?
Translation will make for a more “authentic” tattoo, while transliteration is usually easier to do.
I’ve been looking around….it is really tengwar annatar I want. I’ve downloaded tengwar annatar font on my computer, and now….I’m trying to learn how to translate something corectly.
Anyway, answer to your question is: I want to TRANSLATE those sentences.
For example: FORGIVE ME FOR LEAVING. I NEVER STAY. ![]()
It’s been ages since I translated anything, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving you an answer. You could ask Thorsten Renk here. He is very good with Sindarin, but should be able to help you with either language.
I love this Tenwar stuff!
Have you read The Silmarillion? I think it is absolutely amazing. The best book of Tolkiens hand IMHO.
