The Dixie Chicks Pose Nude

Dixie Chicks Nude

Why is it that people think posing nude stands for some kind of powerful statement?  Or that it will somehow change the minds of those who are on the other side of the debate?  It’s ridiculous.

The Dixie Chicks have now gone and posed nude in Entertainment magazine in order to “take on” their critics.  Woah… that’ll change the critics’ minds.  And if you look at the cover of the magazine, they are trying very hard to look hurt and yet defiant.  The poor, innocent martyrs of the country music world.  Give me a freakin’ break!

Of course Natalie Maines had every right to speak her mind, but people have every right to not buy their CD or even to burn their CD if they want.  And no, free-will CD burning does not take us “back to the days of book burning” as Martie Maguire says in her Diane Sawyer interview.  People burning their CDs in protest is not the equivalent of a fascist government forcing the burning of books.  Both include fire, but that’s about the only thing they have in common.

Never cared for them before, and I certainly don’t care for them now.

Why do entertainers feel the need to jeopordize their careers, by commenting on controversial topics? I remember watching an old press conference with Elvis Presley. He was asked what his views were on the Vietnam war, and his response was something to the effect that he had his own opinions, but that he is an entertainer, and not a politician, and he would just like to keep those opinions to himself.

I agree, the Dixie Chicks were free to speak their minds (especially the mouthy one), and their fans have the right to speak theirs. Death threats against them are not called for, and of course, a good way to end up in prison.

As for me, I’ll just continue ignoring them as I always have.

I feel that everyone has their opinion. We do have the freedom of speech. Just because she said that didn’t stop me from listening to their music

Ehh…I’m reminded of the good old 80s when some Christians went a little berzerk and started seeing the Devil in almost everything in pop culture and ESPECIALLY in Heave Metal music. To me, Heavey Metal music was nothing deeper than a good comic book but boy howdy…Some people blamed it for suicides, homicides, and unplanned pregnancies ( forgetting all the while about a little thing called character. ) Why does this remind me of Metal in the 80s? The burning of cds ( well…albums back then. ) I’ve nothing against anybody expressing his/her opinion and Lord knows I’m not a Dixie Chicks fan, but I can’t help smile and think of something Rob Halford ( lead singer of Judas Priest, band “responsible” for some dork blowing his face off ) said in his Birmingham accent: “Sure, burn all the albums you want…just buy them first.” I don’t think the Chicks wanted to change any critic’s mind. I think it was just damage control for the fans. Did it work? Well…they’re still “officially” hated here in Dallas, but damned if that number one album doesn’t say otherwise.

Jay's gravatar Jay United States June 7, 2006

sigh By “heave” and “heavey” I mean “Heavy.” It’s late…

Chris's gravatar Chris United States June 7, 2006

Heave Metal is that new kind of rock where you bang your head so much you puke, right?

I also don’t have a problem with anyone expressing an opinion, but there is a time and a place for everything, especially when it comes to political opinions. People don’t pay money for a concert to hear the Chicks wax “eloquent” about US politics, especially when the paying fans are in another country. They pay money to hear them sing and put on a good show.

And like I said, if they want to express their opinion, everyone else has a right to express their’s too.

Jay's gravatar Jay United States June 7, 2006

Well, only a fool would bang his head to any kind of music. I tap my foot and sing along, but I guess younger guys have the stamina for head banging. Heavy Metal may have started with The Kinks…so it’s new if 40 year old music is new.

Also, the people who heard the Chicks “wax eloquent” were Brits…and from what I heard, they cheered…so they probably DID enjoy the political opinions. Same as Toby Keith fans enjoy his.

Politics and music have been intertwined since some Medieval composer decided he didn’t like the King so it probably won’t stop soon.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Christian Conservative who voted for W and I disagree with the Chicks. Just thought it was funny and it reminded me certain sects of Christians of the 80s. I didn’t “join up” until I met someone who converted me a couple of years ago so I missed the hubbub.

Chris's gravatar Chris United States June 7, 2006

From what I’ve heard not everyone cheered at the concert. I’m sure a fair amount did, but I’m not really going to rely on the media’s version of the event. Fifteen people in the front row could’ve cheered and the media would play it up to be the entire audience.

I don’t know. I guess I like my music and my politics separate. I hate country music, so I haven’t heard any of Toby Keith’s stuff.

One thing’s for sure. If the Chicks weren’t country music stars, the backlash would’ve been far smaller. A large chunk of country music fans are die-hard Americans and Christians, so the backlash was guaranteed to be large. It was like a slap across the face of America to many of them, I’m sure.

Again, the Chicks can say whatever they want, just choose the time and place better. And please don’t cop a martyr mentality when you’re opinions get you in trouble with your fans.

Jay's gravatar Jay United States June 8, 2006

Yeah, the media tends to overplay stuff. I’ve no doubt that a good portion of the British crowd cheered though. We’re hated over there. I’ve heard some European bands and their stuff is horrible; comparing W to Hitler and other idiotic ideas.

You’re absolutely right about Country music fans. They tend to skew right. Also, I think the comments were said BEFORE the Iraq war when we were still in a Post 9/11 honeymoon with all things American. It probably would not make a difference to country music fans though when it was said. Rock and Rap artists have it easier. Especially nowadays with the President’s approval rating hanging around near Nixon levels. Hell, you’d probably sell a thousand more records the week of your anti-American comment if you’re DJ Badd Spellah or Vainglorious P.I.G..

I’m disappointed in Springsteen and others who toured last year trying to unseat President Bush but I guess I’m able to separate the art from the artist. I love Wagner’s music and the bastard was an Antisemite. Yeesh.

Oh well…back to the glorious world of insurance!

Only an idiot would burn CD’s …. they are plastic and create toxic waste …
if you organize a cd burning you should be fined and or put in jail.
Pop artist making political comments is a bit dumb but not worth creating toxic pollution for.

Jay's gravatar Jay United States September 5, 2006

I know what you mean. When they burned those cds that year, my dog died because of the added pollution. Harsh, harsh day. So I took him to the vet in my hemp-burning car and turned him into compost. Took me a while to get there because I was so high from the fumes, I kept making right turns.

What a double standard! It seems to be appropriate for ministers, priests and others who claim to be “religious” and “christian”. Jerry Faretheewell can blame 9/11 on behaviour of which he disapproves . I do not recall an entertainer such as Charlton Heston, Tom Sellneck being boycotted for their very public opinions on the “right” side. Yet the president and others in his admnistration can call those who dare to question their policies “Traitors”. Yet if an entertainer or other public figure voices and opinion that is “left leaning”, he or she is branded with some derogatory slogan. What hypocrisy!. Notice how the “Christian right” can be so tolerant of their “sides” behaviour. Yet be intolerant of others. Dr. Dobson characterizing Mr. Foley’s e-mails as a joke defies both logic and reason. Where is the outrage of the obvious cover up?
We are subjected to “well the other side did it”
Give us all a freakin’ break.

Jay's gravatar Jay United States October 16, 2006

I seem to remember quite a few cartoons about Charlton Heston’s speaking out for the N.R.A. ( and they weren’t flattering. ) Tom Selleck was a guest star on Rosie O’Donnel’s old T.V. show and was ambushed by his “friend” about his support for the N.R.A. He quickly but respectfully let her have it. The left protests quite a few things. Just recently they stormed the stage at a Minuteman seminar. This had nothing to do with free speech…the minutemen came there to speak, but the left, intolerant as always, didn’t want to hear, so instead of renting a venue and speaking their own points of view, they decided to shout down the Right Wingers. Oh I could tell you stories…remember the bans on tuna because the methods of harvesting the fish was killing quite a few dolphins? People are free to speak their minds. They also have to be aware that they have no control over the consequences.

As for Mr. Foley and his love of pages. I agree with you there. It seems that some on the right went into panic mode. Stupid people associate the actions of a few, with the actions of the whole. If Mr. Foley committed those crimes, hand him over to the justice system. But remember, Foley’s actions do not represent the ideology of the Republican Party ( of which I am a member, ) they are the actions of one man. Mr. Dobson was probably panicking and wondering what to do about the damage the scandal would cause the party and, rather lamely, tried to spin it. By the way, remember MoveOn.org? They started during the Clinton scandal? Their philosophy was “Censure, then move on.” Think they’ll do that in this case? Naaaaaah.

*I don’t know why you are being so hard on them! It is rediculas to hold a grudge for what… THREE YEARS!!!! And I went to the concert in Denver only a week ago, and every person cheered in the stadium! The Dixie Chicks have a right to speak their minds, and I certainly don’t have a problem with them. Even thought all you people have been giving them a hard time, they still keep at it, so I’m giving them all the credit in the world for that! I will continue to listen to their music, and buy their CDs, and they will ALWAYS be my favorite group of country singers.

I certainly think the money is about gone and they are just looking to get the fans coming back to the concerts, personally I think they are $%^% traitors I would not throw water on them if their buts were on fire.

Chelsey's gravatar Chelsey United States February 8, 2007

Oh my god! You guys are so heartless!!!!! What if you and The Dixie Chicks were the only ones left on Earth, and your butt was on fire, and they had the only water supply. Do you think that they would throw water on your big fat butt?! I know I wouldn’t. And I’m sure they wouldn’t dream of it if they heard all that is being said about them behind their backs!!!

Have you guys heard about that new transexual country group? The Chicksy Dicks? Awesome.
