The iPod Arrived!

I thought the iPod was going to be in yesterday, but I was obviously wrong.  Instead it came in this morning, early.  I woke up and it was sitting on my desk.  What a nice present to wake up to, right?

My iPod as it arrived

Just as I predicted, I was like a kid with a Christmas present.  I opened it up and started playing around with it before I had even taken my shower!

My first impressions are very good.  I connected everything up to my iMac, dropped the iPod into the dock and up pops iTunes to copy all my music over.  I also saw the iPod icon on my desktop and copied over all my important work files within a couple minutes.  So within 10 minutes of opening the box, I already had all my music, contacts, calendars and work files copied over to the iPod!  It’s perfect!  Even the box was nice to look at.

It’s amazing how intuitive the interface is and how quickly you can find a particular song you want.  I have almost 600 songs on my iPod, and I can find any particular song within a few seconds.  Very nice.

The options and features are what you would expect.  Clock, games, calendars, notes, equalizer, etc.  All easy to setup and use.

The backlit screen is amazingly bright and makes it a snap to see what you’re doing in any lighting condition.  I set the screen to go dark after 10 seconds, but there are several available options including always leaving it on.

The scroll wheel is awesome!  I kept adjusting the volume and scrubbing through songs because it was so cool to see working.  At first, I was scrolling too fast through the options, but after only a few seconds you figure it out.  I can see how this feature alone blows the doors off of other MP3 players.

It’s small.  Smaller than I thought it would be.  It’s thinner than a pack of cards and narrower, but a little taller as you can see below.  It’s also very light.

One thing that’s not working though is I can’t seem to charge the iPod through my iMac, either through Firewire or USB2.0.  I tried not using the dock and using different Firewire ports, but neither worked.  I tried using the USB through a powered hub, but it gave me a warning that the device was underpowered.  There was nothing else on the hub!  I thought all 6-pin Firewire ports were powered?  Especially on a Mac.  Has anyone else seen this before?  How did you fix it?  I know the cable is fine since I can charge the iPod by using the included power adapter, but it would be much more convenient to be able to use the dock.

Other than that, I am really happy with the iPod.  Luckily I don’t have the static problem with the headphone jack that others have had.  I think that’s mainly with the 40GB iPods though.

Sounds like you really are happy with your purchase. That’s good, considering how much an iPod costs.

I have a question though… is your desk always that neat and organized? Mine looks like a complete disaster, with CDs, DVDs, cameras, external drives, papers, speakers, displays, wires, cables, compact flash cards, miniDV tapes, and the list goes on and on. I’m usually able to find whatever I am looking for though.

Yeah, I’m definitely happy with the purchase, especially considering the cost involved. I also bought a Belkin car adapter and the EarJams and iTrip from Griffin. Those should be coming in soon.

My desk is usually pretty organized. There are lots of cables, but my desk is built with several special cable holes in places so you don’t see them all over the place.

I bought my wife the iTrip too. She loves it, but I think I was somewhat disappointed with the audio quality. I don’t know anyone else who has one, so I can’t compare.
