The Owl & The Pussy Cat

I’ve written The Owl and the Pussy Cat by Edward Lear in Tengwar.  It’s the longest piece I’ve written so far.  I can tell I’m getting the hang of this because I’m getting faster in both writing and reading Tengwar.

In this poem, there weren’t really any words that stopped me in my tracks.  ‘Slices’ is the only word I’m not sure I wrote correctly.  It’s in the third paragraph.

I will say ahead of time that I didn’t write ‘too’ the same way Tolkien did in his Hugh Brogan letter.  It didn’t read right to me.  I kept seeing ‘oot’.  Instead, I doubled the o-tehta over a short carrier.  I could’ve also put a single o-tehta over a long carrier.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking this or anything, but all I can think of when I see these “Tengwar” threads is “where do they find all this spare time?”

It’s great to learn another language, but I have to keep all my learning job related so I can get my work done and make a living.

I figured you would comment on these at some point. =) I’m surprised it took you so long though!

I normally find the time late at night. I’m a night owl, which means I stay up until 2-3am every night. I can do this because I’m self-employed.

I get my work done in the daytime hours, which leaves me plenty of time to do other things, Tengwar transcription being one of them.

It only took me about 40 minutes to do this poem. And that included going back through it to make all the vowels red.

Like I said before in another post somewhere, I have always loved Tolkien’s books. I have since I got The Hobbit and LOTR for Christmas back in ’82. But it’s only recently that I’ve discovered the challenge and fun of Tolkien’s scripts.

Since you like code-breaking, I figured you might like something like this. It’s sort of like encoding/decoding, which I’ve always loved.

I’ve already found several errors in this. Most notably is my writing of ‘to’ as ‘po’ in the first paragraph! What the heck was I thinking?!

I’ve also changed my ‘ee’ and ‘oo’ to look more like Tolkien’s LOTR inscription, with two short carriers.

I can NOT figure out how to write something as simple as ‘I’! I don’t know whether I should just use i-tehta over a short carrier or over ‘anna’.
