Tiger Goodies

I received my copy of Mac OS X Tiger on Monday. After making a backup of my user folder and other important stuff to my iPod, I wiped the drive and made two partitions: one for the system and one for my user files. I’ve had a couple days to play around with it and see what it can do. There are some features I really like, and some things I don’t like. I’ll get to that in a bit.

I’ve put together a list of links to things I think make Tiger that much better. So without further ado, here it is:

Applications:
1. Unify Safari: Replaces the ugly metal look of Safari with the new unified window look. This looks 10x better, IMO. I don’t know why Apple didn’t make it this way by default.

2. Cage Fighter: Removes the butt-ugly gel buttons in the new Mail. This makes Mail much more useable.

Hints/Hacks:
1. View Widgets in Safari: If you’re interested in seeing how a widget is put together, then this will help.

2. Use Dictionary ‘live’: Makes the new Dictionary app that much more useful. I will be using this quite often.

3. Change Dashboard background image: If you also don’t like the perferated metal background when selecting new widgets, then this hack is for you.

4. Replace Phone Book widget mapping service: Replaces MapQuest with the much better Google Maps service. Make sure and read the comments on this since there are some improvements to the original hint in there.

That’s it so far. If you know of other cool apps or hacks, let me know!
