Update on Mandrake

Well… I take back what I said about Mandrake Linux running on my Powerbook.  It’s not.  In fact, I’ve tried four times now to install it and every time I get some kind of error on bootup.  The first three times it told me the kernel was corrupt immediately after I installed it.  The fourth time it said it couldn’t find the bootstrap drive, which is stupid because I can see it in DiskDrake.

On top of that, I STILL haven’t received the CDs I bought from Mandrake.  I cancelled my order today too.  It’s ridiculous that I haven’t received them yet.  I ordered them 9 days ago.  I got my friend to download all three CDs for me and installed it that way.  It was running fine except the time was always wrong and I couldn’t get it to see my modem or network.  So I decided to reinstall.  Ever since then I haven’t been able to get it to work.

So… I bought Yellow Dog Linux instead.  I’m getting it Thursday.  It’s based more on the Red Hat distro, so things should be more stable.  I remember reading in other places that Mandrake is the most user friendly Linux distro, but is more buggy than Red Hat or SuSE.  I believe it.  I reinstalled Red Hat 8 on my old dog PC, and it was a snap.  Everything works, except for the firewall.  I’ll get Red Hat 9 soon since it deals with the firewall issue among other things.

So to anyone who is thinking about installing Mandrake Linux on an Apple computer… forget about it.  It’s buggy as hell.

It seems you shouldn’t install anything at all on your computer, as you’re lacking the BASICS, my dear! Stick to something you KNOW, be it OS8 or s.th… Bla!

An IT Pro, huh? Apparently you’re not since you have no idea what you’re talking about. It turns out many others had the same problem that I did, including the crappy service from Mandrake. I had no problems at all installing Yellow Dog, SuSE or Red Hat on either my laptop or old PC.

And the latest version of Mac OS is 10.3.2, not 8. Get with the times.
