Update On Redesign

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I was thinking about redesigning the site, but nothing has changed yet with the current design.  I haven’t forgotten about it.  In fact, I’ve been giving it a lot of thought.

I most certainly will be redesigning the site in a different style and format than anything I’ve had before.  I’m not into the really long front page, chock full of days worth of posts.  Not only does it make the page take that much longer to download, but it also clutters up design, in my opinion.  There is such a thing as too much information on one page, and I believe my current design has passed that point.

I want something leaner and cleaner, but not boring.  I want something that still shows a decent amount of information, but without taking up too much screen space.  And I want the site to feel more welcoming, more inviting.

I know I’ve got readers who have never commented on any of my posts yet.  Out of the blue, I get emails from people all over the world who ask me about this or that and mention that they enjoy reading my site on a regular basis, yet I’ve never seen them leave comments.  I think part of the reason is because I don’t always write about things that warrant a comment.  Sometimes it’s just to point to something I find interesting or useful.  It’s interesting for others to see, but doesn’t make them want to comment.

So one thing I want to do is make the site feel more approachable or friendly.  Don’t worry, I won’t be putting Hello Kitty icons all over the place!  This means I will also need to create a second blog.  One will be for longer posts that aren’t just pointing to something neat.  The other will be simply for links, maybe with a short description attached to them.  This is nothing new to the blog world, but I’ve never had this before on my site.

I’ve also been working with ExpressionEngine a lot lately for a couple clients and learned a few new things in the process.  I will be rethinking and redoing the code and EE tags in my site as well.

Hopefully, all of this will make the site a little more elegant and easy to use.  We’ll see.  I’m looking forward to getting started on it.
